Description ☀️ Light Full Sun. This plant is a sun-worshiper. It needs at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight to bloom profusely. If kept in the shade, it will become “leggy” and won’t produce its signature golden carpet of flowers. Watering Low to Moderate. Once established in the ground, it is quite drought-tolerant. In Pots: Water when the top half of the soil is dry. The Malta Tip: It hates “wet feet.” In winter, be very careful not to overwater, as the roots can rot quickly in cold, soggy soil. Foliage / Growth It has tiny, trifoliate (three-part) silvery-green leaves. It grows as an upright, bushy shrub that can reach 1–1.5 meters in height. Because it is a member of the legume family, it actually helps fix nitrogen in the soil! Potting Mix Gritty and well-draining. It loves the alkaline, limestone-rich soil of Malta. If planting in a pot, use a mix of standard potting soil and plenty of grit or coarse sand. It prefers “lean” soil over rich, heavy compost. Fertilizer Minimal. It doesn’t need much feeding. A light sprinkle of balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring is enough. Too much nitrogen will give you lots of green leaves but very few yellow flowers. Pet Safety Toxic. Like many members of the broom family, it contains alkaloids (such as cytisine) that are harmful to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten. Keep it away from curious chewers. *Pictures shown may vary from actual product due to the live nature of the items.
